In early July 2009, a riot of the Ouighour community in the Xinjiang region of China left 200 men dead, it is said that 10000 thousands men disappear during the following night. I arrived in the region a few weeks later, the atmosphere was still full of tension, like a latent conflict which could blow up at any time, the Chinese army patrolled the streets with megaphones calling for the unity of the nation, they were trying to avoid new riots and succeeded, Ouighour men were looking at each others, full of suspicion, something was in the air… In town, there were places were one can find a better atmosphere beside the agitation which was going on in the streets,these places are the local tea shops, the places were no Han Chinese would step in, the places were Ouighour people gather for having lunch, for having tea or simply to discuss…Reblogged from: ghost-of-algren+6 notes -
